Sept. 12, 5:30 PM – 7 PM – Tunes & Tales – Workshop/ Concert / Irish Session:
Join Charlene and Matt for an evening of adventures in Irish music! Beginning with an attendee-driven workshop and ending with a session.
Two musicians whose paths have crossed in unusual places over the past 25 years share their adventures—musical and otherwise—in this intimate, stream-of-consciousness performance. Fiddler Charlene Adzima and multi-instrumentalist Matt Shortridge will share significant melodies and the stories that emerge. A tune may spark a memory, and a story may lead naturally into a melody, creating a warm and personal window into the joy, humor, and possibility found on the great musical journey.

Matt Shortridge has been playing Irish music since 1990. Before moving to Viroqua, Wisconsin in 2007, he lived and played in Washington DC and around the east coast, leading sessions, ceili bands and contra dances. He spent a couple of years in Galway, Ireland in the 1990s which cemented his obsession with Irish music. Matt taught at the Augusta Heritage center in Elkins, West Virginia for several years and currently teaches music at Youth Initiative High School in Viroqua.
Charlene Adzima is an energetic Irish fiddler both on stage and in the classroom. As a teenager she fell in love with Irish fiddling and eagerly sought out opportunities to study at workshops and camps with All-Ireland fiddle champions Liz Carroll, Séamus Connolly, and Oisín Mac Diarmada. Charlene’s distinctive playing is known for its danceable, pulsing rhythm and her growing repertoire of newly composed tunes. In 2005 she won the title of Senior Fiddle Champion at the Midwest Fleadh Cheoil and has twice represented the Midwest at the All-Ireland World Championships (Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann).
